You prayed.
Nothing happened.
Or at least, that's what it feels like.
The breakthrough didn't come.
The healing didn't show up.
The door stayed shut.
So you wonder: Does prayer even work? Is God listening? Why bother keeping going?
Yeah, we've all been there.
The silence feels loud.
The waiting feels endless.
But here's the truth straight from God's Word: Prayer works.
Not like a vending machine.
Not always how we expect.
But it always moves something.
Jesus said: Matthew 7:7-8 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
He didn't say "ask and get exactly what you want right now."
He said ask, seek, knock. Keep going. It's a promise with persistence built in.
James 5:16 “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
Powerful. Effective. Not weak. Not pointless.
Even when you don't see it yet.
Think about Jesus Himself.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, He prayed: Luke 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
He asked for another way.
The answer was no.
The cross still came.
But prayer worked—because it aligned Him with the Father's will.
It strengthened Him for what was ahead.
Angels came to strengthen Him (Luke 22:43).
The Father's presence was there.
Prayer changes things.
Sometimes it changes the situation. Sometimes it changes you.
It moves mountains (Mark 11:23-24). It brings peace that guards your heart (Philippians 4:6-7). It invites God's power into the mess.
Why keep going when it feels like nothing's happening?
Because:
God is a good Father who loves to give good gifts (Matthew 7:11).
He hears every word (1 John 5:14-15).
Delays aren't denials—they're often preparation.
Persistent prayer builds faith (Luke 18:1-8, the parable of the persistent widow).
Every prayer is stored up (Revelation 5:8, prayers of the saints as incense). Nothing is wasted.
Real talk: Prayer isn't about twisting God's arm. It's about relationship. Talking to your Father. Trusting Him. Laying it all down.
Simple ways to keep it real and keep going:
Pray short and honest—He doesn't need fancy words.
Pray Scripture back to Him—it never returns void (Isaiah 55:11).
Pray with others—there's power in agreement (Matthew 18:19-20).
Keep a journal—look back and see how He's answered in ways you didn't expect.
When doubt hits, pray anyway. "Lord, help my unbelief" (Mark 9:24).
So if you're tired of praying... If the silence is wearing you down... Don't stop.
Keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking.
He's listening. He's moving. Even now.
And one day—maybe soon, maybe later—you'll look back and say, "Wow. He was working the whole time."
Isn't that worth it? Isn't talking to the God who made everything the greatest privilege?
